Can Proper Car-Care Really Improve Your Gas Mileage?
| Back when fuel for your vehicle was a meager 99 cents per gallon, people weren't talking much about fuel economy This was actually not that long ago, by the way. The trucks being manufactured were bigger, the sports cars on the floor at the dealers were faster with more horse power, and luxury suv's were starting were starting to look more like RV's. Of greater concern to car buyers was the color of the car, truck, or suv and whether it had a cassette player, cd, or satellite radio. We all know the entire scope of vehicles, driving, and the expense of fueling these vehicles has changed tremendously over the past few years. The talk of going green and global warming are two reasons for this. The other reason, however is purely financial. Use our free calculator to calculate how much gas your vehicle has consumed since you bought it. The price of gas has skyrocketed for a variety of reasons mainly supply and demand. Weather events, such as hurricanes, complicated politics, and instability in some parts of the world are some of the other reasons we've been paying so much at the pump. Out go the large sport utilty vehicles and here come the economy cars. They are coming back in style as the automakers continue to develop automobiles that can be operated economically. Many people who have purchased a gas guzzling car, truck, or suv in recent years may find themselves in a situation where a new vehicle is not in the budget. In these cases it is important to focus on keeping a vehicle that was never designed for optimum fuel economy, in tip-top running condition. There are many maintenance factors that automobile owners can control to ensure that their vehicle gets as much gas mileage as it possibly can. Not only the operation of the engine affects our gas mileage, but the operation of the vehicle itself and the way it is driven.

| When the general public thinks of saving the earth, gas and diesel powered vehicles probably come in at the bottom of the list in regards to promoting a green way of life. The car, truck or suv needs to be maintained in a manner that will actually pay you back by the mile no matter if you travel for work or play. Let's start with the basics. An often overlooked method of cutting fuel costs is simply removing unecessary items from your vehicle when they are not needed... as a matter of fact, if you can do without it, maybe you shouldn't take it. It is estimated that most driver's on the road today have unecessary items in their vehicle literally acting as ballast, slowing you down, and decreasing fuel economy. Most of use have heard the tire pressure advice before, but here it is again... improper tire pressure costs you money. Under-inflated tires can reduce fuel mileage by 3 to 5 percent depending the amount of air that is lacking. Always use the recommended motor oil, this can improve fuel economy by up to 2 percent in any vehicle and modern synthetic oil, if you can afford to use it, is even better for saving fuel. A proper tune-up makes your vehicle's motor much more efficient overall, this includes a fresh air cleaner, fresh oil, and a properly functioning emissions system. Not only can proper parts, accessories, and a tuneup by a certified mechanic your car, truck, or suv performing well, how about your driving techniques? Excessive idling of the engine is a waste of gas, hence a waste of your hard-earned money. If you're stuck in a traffic situation for more than a few minutes, shut the engine down. Your lead foot can also be costing you money, accelerating in a reasonable manner is also a way to cut costs. Then look at your cruise speed... studies show that every 5 miles per hour over 60 mph can cost you as much as 10 cents additional per gallon. Now think back to the last time you where cruising at 70 or 75 mph and you do the math. Last but not least, your cruise control is your friend, not only does it make life easier on an interstate highway, it also makes your next stop at the pump not as bad as it could have been.
