Keeping cool has become part of everyday life for millions of American's. Whether we are on the road in our vehicles, at home in our living room, or having a stressful day at the office. A mere 30 or 40 years ago air conditioning was a luxury geared mainly toward the rich and famous. Hotels and restaurants actually advertised if they were air conditioned as an advertising ploy, to let the public know they were at the cutting edge of comfort.
As time went on air conditioning became much more affordable and units became smaller, more lightweight, and less expensive. The general public embraced air conditioning and today it has become as necessary in summer months as heating is in the winter months. Air conditioners in cars are almost a staple, as a matter of fact it is difficult to find a car on today's market that doesn't come with a standard air contioning unit.

Cooling ourselves down to a comfortable level has its price though. Environmental issues from early air conditioners using R12 refrigerant are one drawback, and the other being energy usage. Household cooling systems as well as those found in automobiles both require energy to remove heat from the air and make our lives more comfortable in hot or humid weather.

| The civilized world loves ac! As a matter of fact global warming actually increases our need for ac, which of course has been linked to increasing the rate of global warming. So where do we go from here? The energy rating found on home ac units is a good place to start. Moderation and sensibility is another great place to start. Do I need the air on today? Maybe you do... or can you do without it today. How about in your car? Automotive ac units increase fuel consumption in every vehicle, brand new, slightly used, and the old classics. The extra load added to your car's engine while the air conditioning compressor clutch is engaged causes your engine to work harder to get you to travel at the same speed and distance. We need to make choices when comfort can be achieved through an open window or by merely operating the vent (which is overlooked today thanks to ac). You can actually blow outside air iinto your car using the car's vent instead of the ac. There is no extra load on the car's engine and you can still get yourself a nice breeze inside your automobile even when it may be noisy or rainy outside. The choices you make can be the biggest energy saver when it comes to personal cooling. |
